Gardens in Chandigarh


Chandigarh is popularly recognized as the Garden city of India. Chandigarh has maintained some beautiful gardens. Chandigarh attracts several tourists from round the world because of its excellent display of gardens. Some of the exquisite gardens in Chandigarh are Cactus Garden (Asia's largest outdoor landscaped Cacti and Succulents Garden), Pinjore Gardens, Leisure Valley, and Terrace Garden etc.

Rock Garden

Chandigarh's premier attraction is the Rock Garden. Rock Garden was created by Nek Chand Saini in the year 1958. The city waste substance is converted into creative piece of artwork. Materials like bottles, tin cans, broken plugs, plates, saucers are converted into creative patterns and textures. Rock Garden attracts its travelers towards its small canyon. The canyon opens into chambers, each one filled with scores of human and animal forms in concrete and broken ceramic or glass. The park is open from April to September between 9 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 7 PM. Between the months of October and March; the public can access the garden from 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 6 PM.

Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is one of the beautiful gardens in Chandigarh. It is also known as Zakir Rose Garden. It is even recognized as the Asia's largest rose garden. The Rose Garden is situated on sector 16 next to the city's cricket stadium. Rose Garden is spread to an area of 30 acres which displays about 50,000 rose-trees belonging to almost1600 species. The garden is named after India's former President, Zakir Hussain. This garden hosts the Gardens Rose Festival which is celebrated annually.

Leisure Valley

The Leisure Valley is one of the famous gardens in situated along the foothills in Sector 1 which is widely used for long walks, outdoor yoga, learning to drive, and horse riding.

Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden is ideally situated in sector 1, in the midst of Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake. The Botanical garden is spread to an area of 88 acres. The Botanical Garden attracts travelers towards its rockeries, lily-pools, and the rare species in green houses.

Pinjore Gardens

Pinjore Gardens is popularly known as the Yadavindra Gardens which is about 20 km from Chandigarh, 15 km from Panchkula, situated along the Chandigarh Shimla Road that has great historical significance. Pinjore Garden was designed by Fidai Khan, who was a cousin to Aurangzeb. This garden of Chandigarh is a popular picnic spot.

As per the Hindu mythology, the Pandava brothers took rest at this place during their exile. The garden is spread to an area of 100 acres along the sloping site with fountains and pavilions. A mini zoo, plants nursery, Japanese garden, historic palaces, picnic lawns and Guest house offer great options for leisure to the travelers. During the weekends, fountains are switched on and lights elevate the beauty of historical palaces at dusk.

Terrace Garden

Chandigarh is known for its terraced flower garden which is meant for the walkers. The garden attracts you towards its illuminated musical fountain. The garden hosts the annual Chrysanthemum Show and is spread to an area of 10 acres which was created in 1979.

Cactus Garden

Cactus Garden is known as the National Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden and Research Centre which is ideally situated along the heart of the city Panchkula which is the Satellite town of Chandigarh City. The garden displays about 2500 species of Cacti & succulents.
